ioquake3 is a free software first person shooter engine based on the Quake 3: Arena and Quake 3: Team Arena source code. The source code is licensed under the GPL version 2, and was first released under that license by id software on August 20th, 2005. Since then, we have been cleaning it up, fixing bugs, and adding features. Our permanent goal is to create the open source Quake 3 distribution upon which people base their games, ports to new platforms, and other projects. We have developed the perfect version of the engine for playing Quake 3: Arena, Team Arena, and all popular mods on modern platforms like Linux, Windows, macOS.

Like its predecessors, Quake and Quake II, Quake III Arena can be heavily modified, allowing the engine to be used for many different games. Mods range from small gameplay adjustments like Rocket Arena 3 and Orange Smoothie Productions to total conversions such as Smokin' Guns, DeFRaG, and Loki's Revenge. The source code's release has allowed total conversion mods such as Tremulous, World of Padman, OpenArena, and Urban Terror to evolve into free standalone games. Other mods like Weapons Factory Arena have moved to more modern commercial engines. Challenge ProMode Arena became the primary competitive mod for Quake III Arena since the Cyberathlete Professional League announced CPMA as its basis for competition. CPMA includes alternative gameplays, including air-control, rebalanced weapons, instant weapon switching, and additional jumping techniques. Another mod that underwent several open beta versions and was very popular in 1999-2001 was Quake 3 Fortress (Q3F). The initial version of this game was an indirect port of the Quakeworld Team Fortress mod with many clans and leagues competing in both games simultaneously. Q3F was eventually ported to another Quake 3 mod Enemy Territory Fortress which had limited success. The developers of Q3F eventually abandoned the mod but used it to create the standalone 2003 game Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, which uses the Quake 3 engine and is still popular with approximately 9,400 active players in 2018.
Quake III Arena Arcade for the Xbox 360 was officially announced by id at QuakeCon 2007.[27] The title, jointly developed by id and Pi Studios, was released on Xbox Live Arcade on December 15, 2010. The retail price of the game was set at 1200 Microsoft Points, or $15 USD.[28] Quake Arena DS for the Nintendo DS was announced at QuakeCon on August 4, 2007. John Carmack stated touch screen controls would not be implemented, as he preferred the game be played with the D-pad instead.[29] This version was silently cancelled. Quake Zero was announced at QuakeCon on August 3, 2007, and was an updated version of Quake 3 Arena, distributed by free download, run in a browser window and supported by built-in advertising content.[30] Quake Zero was launched as Quake Live,[31] released in 2010.
Quake is the successor to Doom, the smash-hit action game. In Quake, you're plunged into a brutal and terrifyingly realistic 3D environment where you'll need to rely on your agility, instincts, and a lot of weapons. Multiple players can connect via modem or network in either cooperative or deathmatch modes. If you have trouble with weird colors or incorrect textures in 1.09, throw away all the files inside the "glquake" folder in the "id1" folder to fix the problem.
GtkRadiant 1.6 comes pre-packaged with support for a number of games. Support for more games can be achieve by downloading gamepacks from the GtkRadiant Gamepack SVN, although these additional games may not be officially supported by the 1.6 branch. Learn how you can contribute to the project.
Quake 3 Extras contains revised GtkRadiant and Q3Map2 SDK files for Quake 3 level design, updated for the modern developer. Includes miscellaneous fixes and updates for GtkRadiant, Q3Map2 and Quake 3 Arena 1.32. These should be installed after the Quake 3 gamepack, replacing the necessary files.Updated entity definition files for all versions of GtkRadiant.

This update is now included with GtkRadiant 1.6 and is no longer required. If you are using an older version of GtkRadiant, you will need to download and install Quake 3 Extras separately.
Reading John Carmack's "plan" file(think, old-school version of a blogpost), dated "Jun 16, 1998". They originally planned Quake 3 to be a a sequel to Quake 2, but quickly switched on pushing Quake 3 as primarily a deathmatch game. Two reasons were, with the rate of progress to the game engine development, they'd never hit their target release date if they pushed on with the original plan(and I understand the fear, as that was the time were Duke Nukem Forever and Daikatana not getting released, exist). And, with both time and staff constraints(read up on the credits list when you exit quake 3 and see how small their team was), They'd rather make the best of one aspect, than to make two mediocre aspects.
id Softwareis Level Designer Paul Jaquays updated his .plan with the news that a new free Quake3 Team Arena Map Pack has been released for download. This map pack was created by very talented fans of the Quake 3 Team Arena title, and have been packaged up and offered as a set by id Software. You may be familiar with some of these maps as they have been out on the scene for some time, but the maps in this package have all been tidied up and polished for optimum twitch factor team play.

So, ioquake3 was born. ioquake3 uses a modified version of the id Tech 3 engine, resolves some bugs and adds various features, like support for IPv6. ioquake3 source code is under GPL, and you can download the installer for free...[1] but to install it, it needs the textures, maps and 3d models from the original Quake 3, and they are still under copyright of id Software (only source code is free). This means that you must buy Quake 3 to be able to install and use ioquake3, and you can't share freely the whole thing.
Since ioquake3 source code is free, it has been used to create OpenArena. OpenArena is totally stand-alone (you don't need the original Q3A) and free: all copyrighted material has been removed, everything has a free license. So, you can play a game very similar to the famous Q3A and use the improvements introduced by ioquake3, at no cost.
id Software itself created a new version of Quake 3, called Quake Live (QL for short... a working title was "Quake Zero"), even more Online-focused than the original game. Changes introduced during the years brought some details of its gameplay to noticeably differ from Q3. It used to be "freemium", while nowadays it has changed to one-time buying game.
Quake Champions (QC in short) game followed in 2017. While it can be seen as a Q3/Quake Live successor, it has got major differences. While it aims to keep some classic Q3 feeling, it's however another game, with a more modern engine, with some different weapons and game mechanics (it uses "champions" as "classes" of characters with different stats and abilites). It has got a free-to-play business model.
In March 2016, Quake 3 Arena master server address master.quake3arena.com stopped working due to some problem with idsoftware (master3.idsoftware.com, which in turn is an alias of monster.idsoftware.com, still worked instead), resulting in "no response from master server" error by internal server browser. Users needed to apply a workaround in order to play: 2ff7e9595c
